Haus of Batique

Commercial Project

Client - Jadi Batek

Location - Bangsar, KL

Aim was to re-introduce the way the world sees Batik. Taking a step into the future and bringing Malaysian heritage and culture along.

Batik is an ancient art that has been practised for 2,000 years in southeast Asia. This intricate dyeing process creates beautiful, intricate designs that are unique to the region they come from or tell a story.  The process uses dye-resistant wax to create intricate patterns and designs, and the wax is then washed to reveal the the pattern or the process is repeated to create multiple colors.

Over the past 50 years Batik has seen many ups and downs. However, as time progresses, young artists and designers are starting to take interest in their heritage and using Batik as an element in their work. Through these inspiring Designers and Artists, H A U S of Batique is born. The H A U S aims at giving local artists the chance to work on their projects, while giving back to their community. Artists who are in H A U S, have full access to all our facilities throughout the duration of their stay.

Material & Colour Selection

Getting to know the Materials

When selecting the materials for the H A U S, it was very important that we kept in mind that Batik and all its motifs are inspired by nature.

This is why we used wood as a base to the space because of its smoothness and consistency and contrasted it with the batik materials to work as the pop of colours that you see in nature in the form of flowers.

Using Batik as a material was a way to show Jadi Batek's customers that Batik is not only something from the past, but can be used in a modern and aesthetic way.

Ground Floor

The Ground Floor of the HAUS, is made up of a selected amount of spaces that all  work in conjunction with each other. On arrival, customers are greeted by the Reception Desk, where they will decide what they would like to do. Once the registration is done, they are then directed to the waiting area. From there, they are either brought to the sewing tables, stage or runway area. After, they have the freedom to explore the fashion line or purchase items they are fond of.

First Floor

The First Floor is the centre where all the creative ideas take place. Here designers and artists can come together for meetings or just to do work on their own. It is also a great place for the artists in HAUS to come relax and have some creative downtime.

On the first floor, customers have the chance to learn about Batik History. Moreover, they have the freedom to complete personal work. Groups have space to conduct meetings and brainstorming sessions.

Concept Inspiration

Awan Larat is very popular in batik designs and architecture. After exploring the different

motifs within Malaysian batik, awan larat was the selected motif. The curved styles inspired furniture layout and furniture designs.
